The True Purpose of Karate
Posted by admin in Random Quotes on May 11th, 2007
The true purpose of Karate is not to become the greatest warrior, but rather to continuously push the human mind and body beyond its limits.Far too many people practice martial arts for the wrong reasons. When I meet someone who practices a martial art I initially feel a connection and strike up a conversation with them, trying to learn more about their art and why they practice it. Quite often I walk away from the conversation disappointed.
The conversation always seems to turn to competition. They tell me about how many trophies they have won or about how they live for competition. My heart sinks when I hear this. I believe that competition can be a valuable tool when it comes to developing your technique and gauging your personal level against others. But it should not be the focus of your training.
The true purpose of Karate is to better yourself. Every time you stop onto the floor of the dojo you face new challenges and become stronger for overcoming them. In addition to becoming stronger you will become more aware of your weaknesses. It is my belief that this journey towards perfecting yourself should not come at the cost of conquering others. You must always remember when you engage others that not only are you working towards perfecting your technique, but you are also helping your opponent achieve that same goal.
